There is leisure in being alone. It’s a time when you can fully be yourself without thinking about anyone else. You can let go without the slightest fear of being judged. It’s a kind of freedom many people forget to or don’t know how to enjoy. Solitude is not always loneliness. The art of solitude is the practice of enjoying being by yourself. Western culture does not have a built-in appreciation for solitude. It does not teach us how to be alone. Perhaps why so many of us try to avoid it as much as we do. We are afraid of it, but we shouldn’t be. The spirit and practice of solitude can be quite beautiful. And necessary. I hope if this resonates with you, that you take it with you and keep it for when you need to use it.
