Soft Crush

I saw a pearl in the lake
floating miles from its home
that’s you, eyes all milk

Am I the narcissist,
am I the wolf at the shore,
or are you with me on this one?

For a couple of years, I’ve been working with music producer Pye Luis as his lyric writer. Some people thought it was weird at first, that musicians would have a third party write their lyrics. Actually, some consider it shameful, a musician not writing their own lyrics. For example, Drake had a big controversy over this a few years ago, when he finally stepped up and told everyone, “Music can be a collaborative process.” I don’t know why people are so shocked and appalled by this. Elton John did it. The Beatles did it. Rihanna, Britney Spears, Barbara Streisand, The Beach Boys. Etc. Etc. Etc. Collaboration, for me as an artist, is one of my favorite parts of being an artist. Putting creative minds together is not only fun as hell, but fruitful, and fascinating. Sometimes it is done out of curiosity, and other times it is done out of necessity. I mean, just because someone is amazing at producing songs doesn’t mean that person is good at writing the words to go with it, and why should that stop them from putting something beautiful into the world? Anyway, today’s episode is the opening lines to the new Pye Luis song “Soft Crush,” which will be released tomorrow with a gorgeous video, and this photo was inspired by the video.
