Dividing people is a way to take control. We become weaker the more we are divided. People in power will make up all sorts of things to make us feel different, separate, un-unified. This “othering” (white vs black, American vs. foreigner, Christian vs Jewish, Christian vs Muslim, good black vs. bad blacks, good protesters vs looters, not straight vs straight, etc etc etc) instills a latent fear in us—that the other will come to take what is yours somehow, be it your freedom, your wealth, your security, your significant other, or whatever it is. But division is a tool of the oppressor; it is a game. They instill fear, which eventually leads to hatred, and they do it to keep us weak. When we are fighting each other, we aren’t focusing on the real issue, which is fighting system upheld by those in power in order to keep their power. Don’t let them fool you into thinking different is bad or scary. Don’t let them fool you into thinking skin color is grounds for value judgment. Don’t let the oppressors brainwash you. Variety is the spice of life. The fact that this earth is so diverse is what makes it so beautiful. Together we are stronger. Divided we fall. That is why those of us who believe in true freedom, equality, and love have to stick together, no matter what we look like on the outside, or where we come from. Division is a tool of the oppressor.
