Body Talk

Get to know
your body

howl it awake
like a caterpillar
inside its cocoon

give it an ache
by living grandly
and unafraid.

Get to know
your body

know it so well
any sickness that enters
you can sabotage and expel.

This is a photo taken by and for my beautiful collaboration with Boobs4Prevention. Once a the month, women should be giving themselves a self-breast exam. It doesn’t take long, and it can prevent breast cancer from transforming from a nuisance to a serious, sometimes fatal problem. Detecting breast cancer early is the absolute best way to get rid of it quickly and efficiently. It’s not only those with a history of breast cancer in their families that should be doing this. All of us women should be making a habit of checking ourselves. Life is such a beautiful experience, and there’s no reason to cut it short for something that is entirely curable if caught early enough.

I think a lot of women don’t do it because society doesn’t normalize us touching ourselves in any way. Men, we make jokes about them touching themselves all the time. Women though, we’re meant to be “pure.” So touching ourselves in ANY way then becomes hush hush. I think it’s about time to permanently unhush it, not only for the sake of our physical health, which surely talking more freely about our bodies will keep us in better condition, but it will also help our mental health as well. Sharing stories and experiences in a mental health dream-come-true. It’s the first of the month, and Boobs4Prevention helps spread the word that the first of every month the official day of self-boob-examination, because it’s easy to remember. Check your boobs today ladies, July 1. If you don’t know how, google it, because the information is easy to come by and for good reason. The first way of cherishing your body which holds the life inside of you is to treat it well.
