Unburying the Lights

Freedom gives
our buried lights
a chance
to illuminate us.

What happens when we’re truly free? We feel safe and comfortable to explore the world, to explore ourselves, to consider the vastness of the universe instead of getting stuck in a loop of anxiety. True freedom is living without fear of judgment or fear of attack. That’s not the general world we live in, not how we are taught to behave, perhaps not even how our evolution has shaped us. We consider so much how others are going to perceive us because we want to be loved and we want to be safe. So we hide things. We often hide our thoughts and we hide our feelings because we’re afraid of the reaction from others. We hide our bodies because we don’t want to be judged or violated. We’re told we’re supposed to think certain ways, feel certain ways, look certain ways, and if we don’t, it’s easy to fall victim to worry, worrying about what others think of us or perhaps even do to us.

But when that worry goes away, when we say, “I don’t really care what others think of me. I love myself and I don’t need approval from others when I already have it from myself.” I think that is when we are able to shine the most. That’s when our truest, purest selves are expressed, and in that expression comes enlightenment. We can give ourselves freedom by not putting so much weight on what other people think about us, but reflecting on what is truly important to us and letting that dictate who we are and how we express ourselves.

The other part is up to the collective society, committing to being kind when others express themselves, not falling into the trap of harsh judgments and especially not violating others in a physical way. Oh what a world it would be, to be truly free. Think of all the buried lights inside of us that would be able to shine.
