(Or at the Cliffs of My Resistance)

(Or at the Cliffs of My Resistance)

Sing me a song
at the rocky coast
of my philosophy
that all of this
is beautiful
without being simple
or easy.

MODEL: Mariah is 24, living in San Antonio, Texas, USA (after growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA). Her Mexican heritage has lent itself heavily into her identity. Mariah’s grandmother, who she has been close with her whole life, was born and raised on in Laredo, on the border between the US and Mexico. With talk of a wall of separation being built between the two countries, she feels even closer to those Latin roots, and is vocal about her feelings of connection with not only her ancestors, but all people. She believes in one human race, in love and compassion and finding the positive side of every experience, happy or sad, boring or cloudy or scorching or inconvenient, it doesn’t matter. I spent the night at her apartment not long ago, and in the morning she took me to find breakfast tacos, puro Tex-Mex. The place she wanted to bring me was closed, and instead of spending even one moment pouting, she quickly thought of another spot, and off we went. Her reaction to and attitude toward life’s ups and downs, her ability to go with the flow with such ease is a lovely gift.
