Lullaby

Lullaby

You imagine you can touch her
strings, play her like a cello
until her bones glow
red hot through her skin
until her love is
the pounding rain on ashes.

Marina is 40, from Mexico City. This is her second episode of Skin on Sundays. We actually shot both photos, both her first episode posted, and this one, on the same day. I had only planned one physiopoem for her, but we were just having such a great time sharing ideas and creativity that we improvised and made this one too. This episode reflects Marina’s sexual empowerment, her equal belief to mine that women should be able to express their sexuality without being labeled as slutty or in any way less than. Quite the opposite should be true, not in that all women should be sexually forward, but that they should be able to peacefully express themselves in any way they choose, be it sexually or otherwise. Marina is an intelligent, successful, and strong woman who is in touch with her sexy inner mountain cat, with inspiringly no problem sharing that side of her. +++ Arely Lopez on the other side of the camera this week. Aside from her stunning photography work here, props also to her ability to make my canvases feel so comfortable for this type of risque shot. +++ This is part of a poem from You Had Me At Topography, a book of poetry I published last year. The poem reminds me of Marina, and as we spontaneously decided to do a second episode, it occurred to me in that moment that this would be fitting text to write on her.
