Life Itself is Not Governed

Life itself is not governed
and does not imply
a need to monitor
nor standardize.

This poem is about choosing your own path in life. It’s a privilege to be able to do so, to have the advanced brain that humans have that allows us to feel deeply, experience things so far and wide, make complex decisions and then feel fulfilled or disappointed in the outcome. I know that “choosing your own path” is not always as easy for some as it is for others. I know the weight of responsibilities aren’t always things we have chosen. Still, we have our capacity as human beings to push our lives in the direction we want them to go. We can create small happinesses for ourselves everyday if we try (and if we’re lucky, it even happens when we don’t try at times).

Yet even still, life is so uncontrolled in many, many ways. You can push your life in the direction you want it to go, but things don’t always turn out as planned. You buy a house and you feel safe, but maybe it burns down. You fall in love, and maybe it ends in accidental tragedy. There are no certainties, and the only person that truly makes up the “rules” is you, for your own life. If you feel pressured to fit into the mold society has built and in many ways brainwashed you into believing is the best way to be, know that you don’t have to go that way. You can design your own life in a lot of ways, especially if you are comfortable being uncomfortable while you get your footing. This is a reference to everything, who you choose to have sex with, how you choose to use your money, where you choose to live, your personal philosophy, your relationships with people, how you dress, how you earn a living, having a dog, smoking cigarettes or weed or drinking alcohol or getting therapy or using hallucinogens, your life is yours.

Living your best life is not about appearances or doing what it seems like you should be doing. It’s about listening to yourself. Live for yourself and stop caring what other people think. Maybe you’ve heard that a gazillion times before, but it’s true, so you’ll probably keep hearing it forever, as you should <3

A huge huge thank you to Sophie for inspiring this poem, message, and physiopoem in its entirety, and for being such an open and fun and trusting canvas to work with. Seriously.
