It Starts Quiet

It Starts Quiet

The mind doesn’t start
screaming
like a crowd in the dark
after a gun goes off.
It starts still.
It starts quiet.

It’s so easy for us, especially in this modern world of busyness and chaos, to let our minds get sucked into that chaos. To forget that we have some control over what goes on inside us. No one is saying it is easy to regain peace of mind when the noise inside the brain takes over. On the contrary, it takes a lot of focus and noticing that it was not that way when we began. The mind doesn’t start out noisy, busy, chaotic. It starts out still and quiet until we let things fill it. With a little work clearing out the junk (or not junk, sometimes, too), we can get back to the quiet place, even if just for a little while. We can breathe, we can think clearly, we can let the space we’ve created in our interior world sit there for a bit so that when we do enter back into the chaos, we can do so with a fresh outlook. My beautiful canvas Agustina is going through some interesting and exciting changes and moves in her life right now, and so I felt like it would be important to remember this power we have to calm ourselves in the face of overwhelm.

This photo was taken in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, where Agustina and I met (and even lived together awhile) in 2014.
